Why sampling paint colours properly matters more than you think

Have you ever picked a paint colour, felt so sure about it… and then the moment it goes on your wall, you’re thinking: “Wait… why does this look completely different?”

Because I’ve been there. More than once.

You see, paint colours don’t exist in isolation. They change depending on:

your lighting (morning vs afternoon)
your flooring and finishes
the direction your room faces
what’s around them

A colour that looks perfect in-store, or even online, can feel completely different once it’s inside your home.

That’s why sampling isn’t just a “nice extra step.” It’s the number one step that makes everything else work. And when it’s skipped (or done quickly), that’s usually when regret happens.

Why traditional sampling can feel confusing

Most of us have tried the “little sample pot + paint it on the wall” method. And yes, it works… but also:

It gets messy
You end up with random paint patches everywhere
It’s hard to compare colours side by side
and once it’s on the wall, it feels a bit… committed

Plus, those small patches don’t always show the full depth of the colour, especially when lighting changes.

So even when you’re trying to do the right thing, it can still feel confusing.

A simpler way to test colours at home

This is why I now use peel-and-stick samples when testing colours. It makes the whole process feel much easier and less stressful, especially during a repainting project.

How I usually test colours at home

Sampling your colours is always highly recommended. Here’s how I usually approach it:

I move the samples around the room, not just one spot, because every wall receives light differently
I check them in the morning, afternoon, and evening
I look at them next to flooring, cabinets, and furniture
I narrow it down slowly instead of rushing

And one thing I always remind myself (and my clients):

The colour that works best is the one that feels right majority of the time, not just in one perfect moment.
