7 tips to create a modern farmhouse interior

While traditional farmhouse interior design relies heavily on the use of timber throughout the house with apparent wooden beams and poles, barn-style doors and vintage rustic home décor elements; today’s farmhouse style is more contemporary, minimalistic and streamlined.  

Modern farmhouse interior design has become more and more popular over the past few years. Without having to undergo complete renovations, this style can be easy and affordable to incorporate into your home. 

The key to bring modern farmhouse vibes into your home is to create a welcoming and comfortable space. Keep in mind practicality, simplicity, minimalism, comfort and rustic charm.

Natural materials 

Regarding materials, this interior design style emphasizes on the combination of natural materials such as wood, rattan, wicker, bricks or stone. To add to the rustic side of this style, think about reclaimed or salvaged wood. Natural materials will also help keep your interior connected to the outdoors, another component of modern farmhouse interior design. 

Neutral colour palette 

In a modern farmhouse interior, you will find warm and neutral colours such as shades of white, beige, cream or grey. In order to create contrast, visual interest and avoid your interior from looking boring, you can add accent colours with your accessories, furnishings, or art. When you want to create a contemporary farmhouse interior, you can take a minimalistic approach like in many other interior design styles. Like Scandinavian interior design, modern farmhouse style is about simplicity, uncluttered and functional spaces, welcoming and warm interiors.  

Create contrast 

As modern farmhouse style is defined by simple lines and neutral colour scheme, you need to create contrast in order to add depth and interest to your interior. You can do so by layering and combining materials and textures. Add metal pieces as accents for example in your home décor items or your hardware to bring out authentic rustic vibes.

Home décor and furniture choice 

In a rustic interior, the furniture can often be seen as heavy and in dark wood, however, keep in mind that modern farmhouse style is synonym of simplicity and practicality so, if you have a big piece of furniture you love, make sure you don’t overcrowd the space with other large furniture or too many home décor accessories. When choosing your furniture, think about simple lines and mainly comfort. The key to a modern farmhouse interior is to create a comfortable, welcoming and inviting space. 

Keep it simple, don’t overdo it   

When decorating your modern farmhouse interior, don’t overcrowd the space with too many home décor items. Keep it simple with a few elements that you really love. Don’t buy vintage accessories just because it fits the farmhouse description. Less is more. An uncluttered, functional space will appear more pleasant to the eye, more modern, brighter and bigger.
